Express Entry Uses General Training Only

For Canada's Express Entry, the accepted IELTS version is General Training. The Academic version is not accepted, and neither is the One Skill Retake. Your result is converted into Canadian Language Benchmark levels for each skill, so your skill scores matter more than your overall band.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires CLB 7 in all four abilities in your first official language. In IELTS General Training terms that means 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Meeting CLB 7 makes you eligible, but your ranking depends on how far above the minimum you score.

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class sets the language minimum by the occupation category of your Canadian work experience. For TEER 0 or 1 jobs the requirement is CLB 7 in all four abilities, and for TEER 2 or 3 jobs it is CLB 5 in all four.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program uses a split standard: CLB 5 in speaking and listening, and CLB 4 in reading and writing. This is a lower bar than the other programmes, though your ranking will still depend on your total score.

How IELTS Converts to CLB

A published conversion for IELTS General Training gives these thresholds: CLB 7 needs 6.0 in each skill. CLB 8 needs 7.5 in Listening and 6.5 in Reading, Writing, and Speaking. CLB 9 needs 8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in the other three. CLB 10 needs 8.5 in Listening, 8.0 in Reading, and 7.5 in Writing and Speaking.

CRS Points for Language

For a single applicant, the first official language earns 17 points per ability at CLB 7, 23 at CLB 8, 31 at CLB 9, and 34 at CLB 10 or higher. With four abilities that is up to 136 points. Because points rise steeply between CLB 8 and CLB 9, raising your weakest ability can have a large effect.

Validity and Retakes

Your result must be less than two years old when you complete your profile and when you submit your application. Plan a test date that keeps it valid through the invitation stage, and allow time for a full retake if needed, since partial retakes are not accepted.

Practical Targets

If you want CLB 9 in every ability, you need 8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Listening therefore has a demanding target, and it is worth practising early. Aim for a margin above each threshold on practice tests.
