There Are Several IELTS Types
People often ask which IELTS is required for work, but there is no single answer. The main versions are IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, each assessing four skills. There are also IELTS for UKVI versions for UK visas, and IELTS Life Skills, which tests only speaking and listening for specific family and settlement routes. The correct one depends on who is asking for the result.
Regulated Professions Usually Ask for Academic
Health regulators such as the UK doctors' and nurses' bodies and Australia's health practitioner regulator specify IELTS Academic. The Reading and Writing tasks in Academic are closer to professional and analytical communication, which is why registration bodies prefer it. If you are applying to register in a regulated profession, assume Academic unless the regulator says otherwise.
Migration Routes Often Specify the Version
For Canada's Express Entry, only IELTS General Training is accepted, and the One Skill Retake is not. For New Zealand skilled residence, either Academic or General Training is accepted, and the One Skill Retake is also accepted. For UK work visas that require four-skill evidence, the approved IELTS for UKVI versions are used. Always read the route's own wording.
UKVI Versions for UK Visas
UK visas that need a secure English language test require a version taken at an approved centre, called IELTS for UKVI. The content is similar to the standard test, but it is administered under Home Office rules and produces a result that can be verified for visa purposes. A standard result from a non-UKVI booking may not be accepted for a UK visa application.
Life Skills Is Not a Work Visa Shortcut
IELTS Life Skills covers only speaking and listening at CEFR levels A1, A2, and B1 and is designed for specific family, settlement, and citizenship routes. Because work routes such as Skilled Worker require evidence across reading, writing, speaking, and listening, a speaking and listening result on its own would not normally satisfy them.
In-Person Testing and Other Conditions
Some authorities require the test to be taken in person at an approved centre, and some do not accept partial retakes. They may also require results to be recent, commonly within two years. Read the conditions attached to the accepted test, not just the score, so that a correct score from an unaccepted format does not cause a rejection.
How to Confirm the Right Version
Ask the employer, regulator, or immigration authority which version and format they accept, and save their answer in writing. Read the official guidance page for your route, and note the score per skill, the validity period, and any conditions on the test centre. Book your test only after you are sure, since the version is chosen at registration and usually cannot be changed.
What to Do If the Requirement Is Unclear
If a job posting says only that an IELTS score is required, ask the employer whether they need Academic or General Training, whether a UKVI version is needed, and what score is required in each skill. If they are unsure, check the immigration route or regulator involved. A short email now is much cheaper than retaking a test later.
Cost and Timing of Choosing Wrongly
Sitting the wrong version means paying again and waiting for new results, which can delay a job offer or a visa. Because Listening and Speaking are identical across versions, only Reading and Writing differ, but a result from the wrong version will still not satisfy a requirement that names the other. Take a few minutes to confirm before booking.
Keep Proof of the Requirement
Save a copy of the requirement and any written reply, so that if a question arises later you can show which version was asked for and why you chose it.
